Copper Pipe Grades/Type
Copper pipes are available in different grades or types, each with unique properties that make them suitable for different applications. Here are some of the most common copper pipe grades:
- Type M: Type M copper pipes are the thinnest and most affordable type of copper piping. They are commonly used for low-pressure applications, such as domestic water supply lines, but are not suitable for underground installation.
- Type L: Type L copper pipes are thicker and more durable than Type M pipes, making them suitable for higher-pressure applications. They are commonly used for water supply lines and heating systems.

- In addition to these grades, copper pipes are also available in various tempers or hardness levels, which can affect their flexibility and ease of bending. - ASTM B88: This is the standard specification for a seamless copper water tube, which covers copper pipes used for hot and cold water supply systems, as well as heating systems.
- ASTM B280: This specification covers seamless copper tubes for air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
- ASTM B837: This specification covers welded copper tubes for air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
- ASTM B306: This specification covers copper drainage tubes (DWV – Drain, Waste, and Vent) used for the removal of wastewater and sewage.
- ASTM B819: This specification covers seamless copper tubes for medical gas systems.
- EN 1057: This is the European standard for copper and copper alloy plumbing tubes, which covers copper pipes used for hot and cold water supply systems and heating systems.
- In addition to these specifications, copper pipes may also be certified to comply with other standards and codes, such as NSF/ANSI 61 for drinking water safety or ASME B31.1 for power piping.
